| What an amazing week this has been. I traveled to Guatemala with a group of friends for Semana Santa (Holy Week). It was not like most of the other Central American countries that I have been to. Mary said that it reminded her a lot of South America. Outside of the big North American feeling city a large majority of people wear their native indigineous clothes. They are beautiful and amazing people. As we traveled around I was struck by the thought that I could easily communicate with people around me. Most tourists struggle to pull a few Spanish phrases together to get them to their destinations. As a whole our group was able to ask more detailed questions and really enrich our expereience just by being able to speak the language. We learned a whole lot through our conversations.
As in most Latin countries the focus of Holy Week is on Friday and Christ's crucifixion. Elaborate processions, special masses, amazing artwork and sawdust carpets all culminate on Friday. As I thought about this focus it left me with a sad feeling. What about the resurrection of Christ our Savior. Yes, it is amazing that He allowed Himself to be nailed to a cross, but how much more amazing that He arose victorious. As it says in I Corinthians 15:14 "if Christ is not risen, then our preaching is empty and your faith is also empty," What hope do we have in a dead savior if He has not risen from the dead? I am so thankful that we can celebrate this Easter the depth, bredth and power of God's love for us in the resurrection of His Son Jesus.
| Valentine's Day! I really think that this day can be quite depressing for all of the single people in the world. There is so much hype and consumerisim crammed into this special day of love. I rather like the Latin version of this holiday it is translated Friendship Day. This works for me! I like to think of it as a special day to celebrate and encourage all of the friends that we do have and what a gift from God they are.

| So Last night we had our first stay here group meeting. There are a number of us that are beginning to grow tired of the let's get to know you conversation that we seem to have with short-timers here in Nica land. It is always fun to get to know new people and hear what God is doing in their lives but there are times where you just want to have a deeper friendship. Therefore we have made up a new group of those who don't have any immediate plans to leave Nicaragua. I am looking forward to some deeper friendships. We all just had to laugh because the power went out right before everyone got there and we just lit candles and chit chatted the night away. When the power came back on we didn't even turn the lights back on. | | |
| So I know that it has been forever since I have posted on my blog. So I am going to try and be better about it from here on out.
Today we (several teachers and I) joined a volleyball league in Managua. We all were not quite sure what to think and were really surprised to find that it is totally organized and official. Our team showed up with no numbers, no jerseys and no ball. The other teams had uniforms, numbers and balls. We felt a little unprepared. It all worked out well. We had a great time and really played well. We lost but only by a point. We all laughed as we said hey do you think that we ought to practice some before our next game! Well I guess we will see how it goes. I am just in it for some fun and a good time with people in the community.
| Wow! So I am finally back in the States. It has been a whirlwind so far but it has been really good to be back. I had the most amazing time this morning with a 5th grade class. I met up with a friend Randall Brown that has come to Nica on several mission trips. His son, Grant goes to a private Christian school and Grant's teacher invited me to share a little bit about Nicaragua with the class. I shared a little about what we do in Nicaragua and how NCA (where I teach) is a lot like their school. The class asked really good questions and I could tell that they were really interested in knowing more. At the end the whole class prayed for me. It was so humbling to hear these kids praying for Nicaragua in such a passionate way. What an amazing thing to witness. I left with tears in my eyes. Their teacher has really shown them her sensative heart to the heart of God and it was so cool to see how they responded. I was blown away. What an amazing God we serve.
